Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was raised in Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her Aunt Denise She encouraged DuVernay to be creative and attracted by art. Aunt Denise was a nurse working night shifts to ensure that she could devote the day to literature, art as well as theater, among other things. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be a vehicle for activism. Her mother, too, was conscious of her social status and taught that she could express her thoughts by using the arts. DuVernay lived in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and educated. Her father was awed by the famous civil rights protest on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama was the inspiration she used to produce a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. While she was still a student DuVernay became interested in producing to broadcast journalism. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was recalled having duty of looking after the home and looking through the garbage of one of jurors. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism by the tasks she was handed, DuVernay was inspired to start a new career as a publicist. DuVernay was brought on straight out of college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. In 1999, she launched her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Aside from PR, her agency launched a number of promotions and lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
